Sweatshop Political Cartoons:
explanation by christina |
This cartoon is saying that there are sweatshops being used by many industries. This carton focuses on the shoe industry, the mega-corporation, Nike. In this cartoon it is saying that in Indonesia there are sweatshops used for big corporations and the workers are all girls (caption that is below the cartoon). Also the cartoon is saying that these sweatshop workers don't really earn much because they are mostly wearing baggy clothing, some had to be repaired and some are wearing rags.

This cartoon is saying that the bosses of the sweatshops have total control over everyone. They can treat them as badly as they want because no one can stop them. They can even whip them while working and the workers can not stop them, or even lower their pay with no one to say no. What they say is what the workers have to do, in order for them to keep their job. So, workers would have to work in these conditions or else they will be fired.

This cartoon is saying that a company like, Nike uses sweatshops, too to make their products. The slogan on the wall is saying what and why people are working there. They need to money. There is the Nike symbol pasted on their mouths, not to represent the company, but the fact that they were not allowed to speak for themselves. They can not ask for anything, like a higher pay in salary.

This cartoon is saying that companies are selling a bunch of clothes but many people don't know how they are being made. They are made by sweatshop workers. You can see how the worker's feet is being tied.

In this cartoon it is showing that there are many sweatshops in this world, for example in China. The workers are working even though it is Christmas. The inspectors of the sweatshop is complaining that the workers can not worker any quicker, even if they had tried every type of torture. In the image the inspectors are taller and larger than the workers showing the superiority of them compare to the workers. The inspectors also hold these poles or whips in their hands; in the back you can see that they are whipping the workers to make them work faster. Also if you look close enough you will be able to see that the workers have tears in their eyes.

explanation by christina In this cartoon, it is saying that one sweatshop has many different point of views. From each point of view comes a different type of reasoning. From the point of view of the people who are buying and owning the products they think that the items are cheaper and that it's worth the trouble. From the point of view of the people anti-sweatshops, they can not accept the usage of the workers and giving them low pay for their hard work. The worker/child has a completely point of view from others. This is saying that before we jump to conclusions of the thoughts of the workers, we should ask for their opinions and explanations for need of this job.
